Bernard Rooke brutalist stoneware vase

Sorry, this item has sold.

Your chance to own a fantastically organic vintage vase, by Bernard Rooke (born 1938), the British artist and studio potter. Wikipedia says: 'Rooke has exhibited his "Brutalist" ceramics and painting both in the UK and abroad with work in many collections both public and private including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Nuffield Foundation, Paisley Museum and Art Galleries, Leicester Museum, Buckinghamshire County Museum, Röhsska Museum in Sweden and the Trondheim Kunstmuseum in Norway. His work has become sought after at auction houses in the UK and USA'.

This is perfectly his style - this kind of stoneware, with earthy colours and organic shapes and subject matter. This vase features swooping thick leaves and perching birds. The rough leaf and bird parts are a lovely russet brown and sandy colour, and the smooth parts at the side and front/back under the curve are a creamy/taupe earthenware glaze. The inside is more of a sage green speckled earthenware glaze.

Although we can't see a stamp on here, we bought this vase at an auction in Suffolk (same county as Rooke) where it was described as a 'Bernard Rooke pottery vase, decorated with perched birds, 19cm high'.
